Question: There is a 90% chance that me and my husband who is in the Army will be relocting to Ft. Drum. We are married with no kids however we do have 2 big dogs and a chain link portable fence/cage that they stay in. If we were to live on base is there a location that would be suitable or would we have to live off base? There is no way a small apt or townhome would work we would need something with a small back yard that would allow fencing.

Dear Amanda,

Thank you for taking the time to ask a question.

I suggest you take a look at the Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes web site at www.fortdrummch.com

Fort Drum’s on-post housing is managed by Mountain Community Homes.  They are in the process of building 845 new homes on post.  Renovations have also been made to the 2200 plus existing units.  The new homes have fenced in yards.

Certainly, as a civilian resident of the area, I’d recommend that you also take some time to look around at the community.  There are many lovely communities where you would be welcomed as a neighbor.  With the expansion at Fort Drum, the community has responded and continues to respond with construction of new units.

Look at the Housing links under the Relocation tab on www.DrumCountry.com.  You should take a look at the for sale properties as well.

And feel free to ask any additional questions.

Submitted By: Debbie on 09/09/2007 - You are allowed 2 pets in any Army housing area on or off post. Most on post is already fenced. Off post allows you to put up fence. Most rentals in the area don't allow dogs. So housing will be the best choice for you. Good luck with your move :)
